  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Clinical Pathway

An Evidence-Based Clinical Pathway for Biomarker-Based TBI Evaluation and Management

  • Advancing Objective Diagnostics Through Integrated Clinical Expertise

Traumatic brain injury has historically presented significant diagnostic challenges, with clinical assessment relying heavily on patient-reported symptoms, examination findings, and other measures that may not fully characterize the presence, nature, or extent of neurologic injury.

The BioConnetiX TBI Clinical Pathway is designed to bring greater objectivity and clinical depth to TBI assessment by integrating defined biomarker testing protocols with expert pathology interpretation, relevant clinical findings, and neurologic subspecialty consultation.

  • Beyond Biomarker Testing

Integrated Diagnostics. Expert Interpretation. Coordinated Neurologic Care.

From Biomarker Evidence to Coordinated Neurologic Care

The BioConnetiX TBI Clinical Pathway extends beyond laboratory testing to connect objective biomarker findings with expert pathology interpretation, neurologic subspecialty consultation, and patient-specific clinical decision support.

    Diagnostically Aligned Laboratory Testing

Participating laboratories align designated tests and assays with defined Pathway diagnostic standards, including applicable reporting requirements, interpretive thresholds, and clinical reference frameworks. This alignment supports consistency in how biomarker findings are reported and interpreted across independent laboratories, while preserving each laboratory's responsibility for analytical performance and test validation.

    Pathology-Led Clinical Interpretation and Coordination

Each patient is assigned a Pathway Pathologist who serves as the Primary Pathway Clinician (PPC) and central point of clinical coordination.

The Pathologist reviews biomarker findings in the context of the patient's injury history, clinical presentation, relevant medical conditions, and available diagnostic records. The resulting Interpretive Report goes beyond individual laboratory values to evaluate biomarker patterns, their potential clinical significance, relevant diagnostic correlations, and important limitations or unresolved questions.

Through the Pathway's network of participating Pathologists, Treating Providers gain access to specialized diagnostic interpretation and coordinated clinical resources without having to independently identify and engage multiple specialists.

    Integrated Neurologic Subspecialty Consultation

A defining feature of the TBI Clinical Pathway is its integration of highly specialized neurologic physicians, including neurointensivists and other qualified subspecialists, into the diagnostic and clinical consultation process.

Following a positive TBI diagnostic assessment, Treating Providers can request a comprehensive Clinical Integration Consultation & Report, coordinated by the assigned Pathway Pathologist and prepared by a participating neurologic subspecialist.

Building upon the Pathologist's interpretation, the neurologic subspecialist evaluates the findings alongside the patient's clinical history, neurologic presentation, imaging, prior diagnostic studies, and available treatment records. The resulting report may address diagnostic considerations, additional evaluation, unresolved clinical questions, treatment and rehabilitation considerations, specialist referrals, and longitudinal monitoring.

This approach gives Treating Providers a coordinated means of accessing advanced neurologic expertise that might otherwise be difficult to identify or engage, while keeping clinical decision-making and ongoing patient management with the Treating Provider.

Expanding Access to Longitudinal Neurologic Care

Accurate diagnosis is only the beginning. For many patients with traumatic brain injury, access to appropriate neurologic follow-up, treatment, rehabilitation, and ongoing monitoring presents an equally significant challenge.

BioConnetiX is working to extend the Pathway's consultative network to include opportunities for direct neurologic care, including telehealth-based specialist relationships, longitudinal assessment, and clinically appropriate rehabilitation and technology-enabled treatment options.

The objective is to create a more connected continuum – from objective diagnostic assessment and specialized clinical interpretation to informed treatment planning and long-term neurologic care.

Connecting Today's Care With Tomorrow's Evidence

Beyond supporting individual patient care, the Pathway is designed to contribute to the ongoing advancement of TBI diagnostics. Through appropriately authorized use of de-identified clinical and laboratory data, BioConnetiX supports research, validation, and the evaluation of relationships among biomarkers, clinical findings, and patient outcomes.

This approach creates opportunities to refine diagnostic understanding and develop stronger evidence for future clinical applications.
